Coloured SEM of Rose aphid nymph feeding on a leaf

Rose aphid nymph. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a Rose aphid nymph Macrosiphon rosae feeding on a rose leaf. This wingless nymph is an immature form of the adult aphid. Known as plant lice, aphids are specialised plant feeders that suck the sap from plant veins. At centre is the head with long antennae, compound eyes, and a tube-like sucking mouthpart (proboscis). The pro- boscis is penetrating the leaf surface while it feeds. There are three pairs of walking legs; at the posterior end of the body are two short tubes called cornicles which secrete pheromones and waxes. Macrosiphon rosae feeds on domestic roses. Magnification x25 at 6x9cm size. Magnification: x80 at 15x27cm size

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate details of a Rose aphid nymph as it feeds on a delicate rose leaf. The coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) reveals the fascinating features of this wingless nymph, which is an immature stage of the adult aphid. Known as plant lice, these specialised feeders extract sap from plant veins to sustain themselves. At the center of the image, we observe the nymph's head adorned with long antennae and compound eyes that provide sensory perception in its tiny world. Its tube-like sucking mouthpart, known as a proboscis, can be seen penetrating the surface of the leaf while it indulges in its meal. The nymph possesses three pairs of walking legs that aid in maneuvering across leaves and stems. Towards its posterior end are two short tubes called cornicles, responsible for secreting pheromones and waxes essential for communication within their community. Macrosiphon rosae is specifically adapted to feed on domestic roses, making this microscopic creature both intriguing and potentially troublesome for garden enthusiasts. This remarkable SEM image has been magnified 25 times at a size of 6x9cm or 80 times at 15x27cm dimensions to allow us to appreciate every minute detail. Captured by Science Photo Library, this photograph provides an extraordinary glimpse into the hidden world of invertebrates and highlights nature's incredible diversity.
