Comet ISON, April 2013 C015 / 9816

Comet ISON (C/2012 S1), as observed on 10 April 2013 by the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). This comet was discovered on 21 September 2012 by the International Scientific Optical Network (ISON). Here, it is 621 million kilometres from the Sun, and 634 million kilometres from the Earth. It will pass close to the Sun in November 2013, increasing greatly in brightness. The area visible here is over 80, 000 kilometres across, and was obtained by the HSTs Wide Field Camera 3 (WFC3) instrument. The cometary nucleus itself is only a few kilometres across. For an enhanced view of the comets coma, see C015/9817

EDITORS COMMENTS
This breathtaking print captures Comet ISON (C/2012 S1) as observed by the Hubble Space Telescope on April 10,2013. Discovered by the International Scientific Optical Network on September 21,2012, this comet is located approximately 621 million kilometers from the Sun and 634 million kilometers from Earth. As it approaches its close encounter with the Sun in November of that year, Comet ISON is expected to dramatically increase in brightness. The image showcases an area spanning over 80,000 kilometers across and was obtained using the HST's Wide Field Camera 3 instrument. The cometary nucleus itself measures only a few kilometers in diameter. For a more detailed view of the coma surrounding the nucleus, another enhanced image can be found under C015/9817. Comet ISON's tail can be seen trailing behind it as it journeys through space. Composed of dust and gas released by outgassing as it nears our star, this magnificent celestial body offers us a glimpse into the wonders of our solar system. Captured with precision and expertise by NASA/ESA/STSCI/J. -Y. LI (PLANETARY SCIENCE INSTITUTE)/HUBBLE COMET ISON IMAGING SCIENCE TEAM/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY, this photograph serves as a reminder of humanity's insatiable curiosity about astrophysics and our relentless exploration beyond Earth's boundaries into the vastness of space.
