Computer hard disk read / write head, SEM

Computer hard disk read/write head. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the read and write electromagnetic device (head) of the hard disk of a computer. Computers store data on magnetic media, with the polarity of the magnetism (up or down) corresponding to the one or zero of computing binary code. An electromagnet (grey block, upper left) is magnetised using electricity from the wires seen at lower centre. It is then used to alter the magnetism of the disk, writing data onto it. This device also reads data from the disk. The hard disk (seen in background) rotates. The head moves radially above the disk to access all parts. Magnification: x20 at 6x7cm size

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from Science Photo Library showcases the intricate details of a computer hard disk read/write head. In this coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM), we are given a glimpse into the inner workings of this electromagnetic device that plays a crucial role in storing and retrieving data on magnetic media. The image reveals an electromagnet, represented by a grey block in the upper left corner, which is magnetized using electricity from the wires seen at the lower center. This magnetism is then used to alter the polarity of the disk, allowing for data to be written onto it. Simultaneously, this remarkable device also reads data from the disk. The background features the hard disk itself, rotating as needed while its head moves radially above it to access different parts. The magnification level of x20 at 6x7cm size allows us to appreciate every minute detail present in this complex system. It's fascinating how computers utilize magnetic properties and binary code (represented by up or down polarity) to store information effectively. This SEM image serves as a reminder of how far technology has come and highlights our reliance on these electronic marvels for everyday tasks. Overall, Science Photo Library has captured not only an aesthetically pleasing composition but also a visual representation of technological innovation that continues to shape our modern world.
