Dodder twining round host stem

The stem of a plant entwined with dodder, Cuscuta americana. This is a parasitic non-green plant of the family Convolvulaceae. The seed of the dodder germinates sending a little root into the ground while the shoot elongates rapidly, growing in ever- widening circles. If it meets a suitable host plant it twines around the stem and produces suckers or haustoria which penetrate the tissues of the host. The xylem and phloem of these organs make contact with those of the host, and thus the parasite obtains organic substances as well as water and salts. Meanwhile the root of the dodder dies. Once established it produces leaves and flowers and grows vigorously

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate dance between a dodder plant and its unsuspecting host stem. The dodder, scientifically known as Cuscuta americana, is a parasitic non-green plant belonging to the Convolvulaceae family. Its life cycle begins when its seed germinates, sending a tiny root into the ground while rapidly elongating shoots grow in ever-widening circles. As if driven by an invisible force, this relentless dodder seeks out suitable host plants to twine around their stems. It then produces suckers or haustoria that penetrate deep into the tissues of its unwitting victim. Through these specialized organs, the parasite establishes contact between its own xylem and phloem with those of the host plant. In doing so, it cunningly siphons off organic substances, water, and salts necessary for its survival. Meanwhile, as this parasitic relationship flourishes above ground, beneath the surface lies a different story. The root of the dodder eventually perishes once it has secured itself onto a hospitable host stem. Once firmly established on its chosen victim's support system, this tenacious dodder proudly displays leaves and flowers while growing vigorously towards success. Through this remarkable image captured by Science Photo Library in all its botanical glory – we witness nature's ingenious strategies for survival at play: an entwined embrace between predator and prey in which one thrives at another's expense.
