Engraving of a Wilson microscope

Engraving of a Wilson screw barrel microscope (1720), designed by James Wilson, an English optical instrument maker. The microscope is about 1 inch (2.54cm) in diameter & 2 inches (5.08cm) long. This was a single-lens microscope, a development on Antoni van Leeuwenhoeks earlier idea. The lens (L) fitted inside the plate (K), which was then screwed into the end of the microscope at (G). The screw mount was for focusing. The specimen was viewed by holding the handle (I) & looking at a light through the lens (K). The other end (C) held the condenser lens. (M) is the slider holding four specimens mounted between bits of mica. Reference: MICROCOSMOS, pages 186-187

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases an engraving of a Wilson screw barrel microscope, designed by the renowned English optical instrument maker, James Wilson. Dating back to 1720, this remarkable single-lens microscope was a significant advancement from Antoni van Leeuwenhoek's earlier concept. Measuring merely 1 inch in diameter and 2 inches in length (2.54cm x 5.08cm), this miniature marvel revolutionized microscopy techniques of its time. The lens ingeniously fitted inside the plate which was then securely screwed into the end of the microscope for optimal focus using the screw mount at (G). To observe specimens, one would hold onto the handle (I) while peering through the lens (K) towards a source of light. At the other end (C), a condenser lens awaited to enhance clarity and precision during examination. The true beauty lies within its functionality as seen in this image - with slider (M) holding four meticulously mounted specimens between delicate sheets of mica. This ingenious design allowed scientists and researchers to delve deeper into their studies with unprecedented detail. As we gaze upon this historical masterpiece captured by Science Photo Library, we are reminded not only of our scientific heritage but also how far technology has advanced since these early days of microscopic exploration.
