False-colour SEM of the structure of the retina

False-colour scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the eye retina. The retina, which detects visible images, is made up of many layers of cells (seen here). Running diagonally from top left (purple) is a layer of closely-packed rod cells. Rod cells and cone cells (not visible here) are specialized light sensitive cells. Rods detect light intensity & cones detect colour. Nerve cells beneath this (white, brown) transmit nerve impulses from rods & cones to the optic nerve & brain. At top right, a layer of pigment cells which is normally attached to the surface of rods & cones, has peeled away. Magnification: x720 at 6x7cm size. Magnification: x1100 at 4x5 inches size

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate structure of the retina, captured through a false-colour scanning electron micrograph (SEM). The retina, responsible for detecting visible images, is composed of numerous layers of cells that are beautifully displayed in this image. Running diagonally from the top left corner in a striking purple hue, we can observe a layer densely packed with rod cells. These specialized light-sensitive cells work alongside cone cells (not visible here) to enable our visual sense by detecting light intensity and color respectively. Beneath the rods and cones lie nerve cells depicted in white and brown shades. These crucial components transmit nerve impulses from the photoreceptor cells to both the optic nerve and brain, facilitating our ability to perceive what we see. At the top right corner of this mesmerizing image, an intriguing detail unfolds as a layer of pigment cells has peeled away from its usual attachment to rods and cones. With magnifications reaching x720 at 6x7cm size or x1100 at 4x5 inches size, this photograph offers us an unprecedented glimpse into the complex anatomy behind our vision. It serves as a reminder of how intricately designed our human body truly is while shedding light on one aspect that plays an essential role in shaping our perception – the retina.
