Jacques Reverdin, Swiss surgeon
Jacques Louis Reverdin (1842-1929), Swiss surgeon. Reverdin studied medicine in Paris, and worked as surgeon to the Swiss ambulance service during the siege of Paris in 1870. On returning to Geneva, Reverdin worked for 34 years at the hospital, and 24 years in the faculty of medicine. He performed the first human skin graft operation around 1870, and in 1908 he performed the first skin allograft (between two people). His methods revolutionised the treatment of wounds by helping to prevent infection and hasten healing. Epidermal or pinch grafts are called Reverdin grafts in his honour, and a type of suture needle is also named after him

This print captures the esteemed Jacques Reverdin, a pioneering Swiss surgeon whose groundbreaking contributions revolutionized the field of medicine. Born in 1842, Reverdin studied medicine in Paris before serving as a surgeon for the Swiss ambulance service during the siege of Paris in 1870. Upon returning to Geneva, Reverdin dedicated himself to his work at the hospital for an impressive 34 years while also teaching at the faculty of medicine for another 24 years. It was around 1870 that he performed his first human skin graft operation, forever changing wound treatment by preventing infections and expediting healing processes. In addition to this remarkable achievement, Reverdin made history again in 1908 when he conducted the first-ever skin allograft between two individuals. His innovative methods earned him great recognition within medical circles and led to epidermal or pinch grafts being named after him - they are now known as "Reverdin grafts".
