Kepler-35 planetary system, artwork C015 / 0790

Kepler-35 planet system, artwork. This Saturn-size planet orbits a binary star system (top). The larger star is similar in size to the Sun, while the smaller stars diameter is 4/5th that of the Sun. The stars orbit and eclipse each other every 21 days. The planet orbits every 131 days, though climate and seasons would change greatly during its orbit due to the presence of two suns. This system is one of a new class of circumbinary planets (though orbiting binary systems), of which there may be millions in our galaxy. Kepler-35 is 5400 lights years from Earth, in the constellation of Cygnus. Artwork published 2012

EDITORS COMMENTS
This artwork, titled "Kepler-35 Planetary System" offers a mesmerizing glimpse into the vastness of our universe. The image showcases a Saturn-size planet gracefully orbiting a binary star system at the top. The larger star, resembling our Sun in size, shares its celestial dance with a smaller companion whose diameter is 4/5th that of the Sun. Every 21 days, these two stars elegantly eclipse each other as they continue their cosmic waltz. Meanwhile, this remarkable planet completes its own journey around them every 131 days. However, what sets this system apart is the ever-changing climate and seasons experienced by this alien world due to the presence of two suns illuminating its skies. Situated an astonishing 5400 light years away from Earth in the constellation of Cygnus, Kepler-35 represents one among millions of circumbinary planets within our galaxy. This extraordinary illustration was published in 2012 and beautifully captures not only the scientific wonder but also sparks our imagination about what lies beyond. The artist behind this masterpiece is Lynette Cook from Science Photo Library who skillfully brings to life this distant planetary system with vibrant colors and intricate details. As we gaze upon this artwork, we are reminded once again of how small we are in comparison to the vastness and diversity present throughout our Milky Way galaxy.
