Open-pit coal mining C016 / 5809

Open-pit coal mining. Excavated coal deposits being loaded onto a truck at an open-pit coal mine. Also called open-cast mining, this technique is used when the overburden, surface material covering the coal, is thin. Rather than using tunnels, the whole area is excavated using heavy machinery such as dragline excavators. This mine is near Kemmerer, Wyoming, USA. The Kemmerer Mine, which has a number of active sites in south-west Wyoming, became one of the worlds largest open-pit coal mine systems when it converted to strip mining in the 1950s

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the process of open-pit coal mining in Kemmerer, Wyoming, USA. The image captures a moment where excavated coal deposits are being loaded onto a truck at the expansive open-pit mine. Open-pit mining, also known as open-cast mining, is employed when the overburden - the surface material covering the coal - is relatively thin. The photograph highlights the immense scale and technological prowess involved in this method of extraction. Heavy machinery like dragline excavators are utilized to excavate and transport large quantities of coal efficiently. The Kemmerer Mine, situated in southwest Wyoming, holds distinction as one of the world's largest open-pit coal mine systems since its conversion to strip mining during the 1950s. The composition reveals layers upon layers of sedimentary rock formations surrounding this industrial site. It serves as a reminder that beneath these strata lies an abundant energy resource - fossil fuel in the form of carboniferous strata. As we gaze upon this striking image captured by Dr Juerg Alean from Science Photo Library, we witness not only an impressive feat of engineering but also reflect on our dependence on such resources for energy production. This photograph encapsulates both awe-inspiring technological advancements and raises questions about sustainability and environmental impact within our ever-evolving industrial landscape.
