Radiation belt storm probes, artwork C014 / 0368

Radiation belt storm probes, artwork. These two satellites will orbit the Earth studying the Van Allen radiation belt, a torus of ionised particles that surrounds the Earth, trapped by its magnetic field. The belts are harmful to satellites and humans that travel through them, and shielding is difficult and expensive. Space weather, generated by the solar wind, causes changes in the size and composition of the belt. The probes will study these changes and their causes. The probes are due for launch on the 23rd August 2012

EDITORS COMMENTS
This artwork, titled "Radiation Belt Storm Probes" showcases two satellites orbiting the Earth with a purposeful mission. These remarkable probes were designed to study the Van Allen radiation belt, an intriguing torus of ionized particles that envelops our planet, held in place by its magnetic field. The belts pose significant risks to both satellites and humans traversing through them, making shielding a challenging and costly endeavor. The primary objective of these probes is to investigate the ever-changing nature of the radiation belt caused by space weather generated by solar winds. This dynamic phenomenon alters the size and composition of the belt, warranting thorough examination into its causes. Scheduled for launch on August 23rd, 2012 as part of NASA's Living With a Star program, these pioneering spacecraft represent cutting-edge research in astrophysics. Through their meticulous observations and data collection within Earth's magnetosphere, these probes aim to unravel mysteries surrounding plasma physics and space weather phenomena. Their findings will not only enhance our understanding of our own planet but also contribute invaluable insights into near-Earth space exploration. This awe-inspiring composite image serves as a testament to human ingenuity and scientific progress in the 21st century. It symbolizes humanity's relentless pursuit of knowledge about our vast universe while highlighting NASA's commitment to pushing boundaries beyond commercial endeavors. As we gaze upon this stunning illustration from NASA/Science Photo Library, we are reminded once again that there is still so much left unexplored in our cosmic backyard.
