These two satellites will orbit the Earth studying the Van Allen radiation belt, a torus of ionised particles that surrounds the Earth, trapped by its magnetic field. The belts are harmful to satellites and humans that travel through them, and shielding is difficult and expensive. Space weather, generated by the solar wind, causes changes in the size and composition of the belt. The probes will study these changes and their causes. The probes are due for launch on the 23rd August 2012
