Spiral galaxy NGC 4414

Spiral galaxy NGC 4414, Hubble Space Telescope image. New stars are being formed on the edges of the galaxy. These stars are blue, compared to the older stars in the centre. This is a flocculent spiral galaxy, meaning that the spiral arms are not well defined. The outer region is rich in clouds of interstellar dust. Due to the large size of this galaxy, it was photographed in sections by Hubbles Wide Field Planetary Camera 2 in 1995 and again in 1999, and a composite image was produced. Brightness measurements on some of the stars have revealed that the galaxy is about 60 million light years away from Earth

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the mesmerizing Spiral galaxy NGC 4414, as captured by the Hubble Space Telescope. The image reveals a remarkable phenomenon occurring at the edges of this spiral galaxy - the birth of new stars. These young stars shine with a brilliant blue hue, contrasting against the older stars residing in the galactic center. NGC 4414 is classified as a flocculent spiral galaxy, characterized by its less defined spiral arms. However, what it lacks in arm definition, it compensates for with an outer region abundant in interstellar dust clouds. This cosmic dust adds to its ethereal beauty and mystique. To capture this immense celestial structure adequately, Hubble's Wide Field Planetary Camera 2 photographed NGC 4414 in sections over two separate years - 1995 and 1999. By combining these images into one composite masterpiece, scientists were able to study and analyze various aspects of this distant galaxy. Through brightness measurements on selected stars within NGC 4414, astronomers estimated that this awe-inspiring spectacle resides approximately 60 million light-years away from Earth. Such discoveries contribute immensely to our understanding of cosmology and astrophysics while reminding us of the vastness and grandeur of our universe. (Photo credit: Science Photo Library)
