Spruce needle stomata

Spruce needle stomata. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of two stomata (pores) on the surface of a needle of a sitka spruce (Picea sitchensis). The stomata are in sunken pits. Each stoma can be opened and closed by the two guard cells (light green) on either side of it. This allows the exchange of gases between the plant and the air to be controlled. The sunken stomata and the layer of wax (pale green) covering the surface of the needle minimise water loss from the tree. This conifer is native to North America, being most common in the north-west. Magnification: x670 at 6x7cm size

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate beauty of spruce needle stomata. In this coloured scanning electron micrograph, we are granted a close-up view of two stomata, or pores, on the surface of a sitka spruce needle. These stomata are nestled within sunken pits and play a crucial role in regulating gas exchange between the plant and its surroundings. The remarkable mechanism behind these stomata is revealed as we observe the two guard cells, depicted in light green, positioned on either side of each stoma. These guard cells have the extraordinary ability to open and close, enabling precise control over gas exchange with the atmosphere. To protect against excessive water loss from transpiration, both the sunken stomata and a delicate layer of wax covering the needle's surface work harmoniously. This combination serves as an effective barrier against evaporation while ensuring that essential gases can still be exchanged. Native to North America but most commonly found in its north-western regions, this coniferous tree species known as Sitka spruce demonstrates nature's ingenious adaptations for survival. With a magnification level of x670 at 6x7cm size captured through scanning electron microscopy (SEM), this image provides us with an awe-inspiring glimpse into the microscopic wonders hidden within our natural world.
