Tropical storm Zeta, 2nd January 2006

Tropical storm Zeta over the Atlantic Ocean on 2nd January 2006. Zeta was the 27th named storm of the 2005 Atlantic hurricane season, extending the already record-breaking season yet further. The previous record was held by 1933s 21 named storms. Tropical storm Zeta formed on 30th December 2005 and became only the second tropical storm since records began to be active in the new year, after hurricane Alice in 1954-5. The 2005 season also contained a record 14 hurricanes, including Katrina, which destroyed the city of New Orleans, USA, Stan, which caused over 1000 deaths in Central America, and Wilma, the most intense Atlantic hurricane ever recorded. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the immense power and beauty of Tropical Storm Zeta as it looms over the vast Atlantic Ocean on January 2nd, 2006. Serving as a stark reminder of the relentless force of nature, Zeta marked the 27th named storm during the unprecedented 2005 Atlantic hurricane season. This record-breaking season surpassed even that of 1933, which held the previous record with its 21 named storms. Formed on December 30th, 2005, Tropical Storm Zeta defied expectations by becoming only the second tropical storm in recorded history to emerge in the new year. The first was Hurricane Alice back in 1954-55. The catastrophic events throughout this historic hurricane season included notable hurricanes such as Katrina, which devastated New Orleans; Stan, responsible for over a thousand deaths in Central America; and Wilma, known as one of the most intense Atlantic hurricanes ever documented. Captured by MODIS instrument aboard Aqua satellite from space, this mesmerizing image offers a glimpse into Earth's climatological dynamics. Its spiraling clouds and cyclonic structure serve as reminders of our planet's intricate meteorological systems. Presented by Science Photo Library (not affiliated with any commercial use), this photograph is not just an awe-inspiring visual but also a testament to humanity's continuous efforts to understand and predict weather patterns for better preparedness against future natural disasters.
