Copperplate 17th century arms for Inns of Court

This image is from a copperplate engraving, and shows part of a roll of arms from Richard Blomes Britannia, an atlas published in 1673. It features the coats of arms of people who contributed towards the completion of the work a starting with King Charles II. Each page includes 35 coats of arms, presented here in pairs. These two coats of arms are from folio (page) 23 of the work. In old English, ans appeared as a longs (which looks like an f ), while ss appeared as fs. Com was an abbreviation for County. A number is assigned to each benefactor. Here are the accompanying texts (followed by modernised English where appropriate): 795. Ye Atcheivement of ye Hon ble Society of LINCOLNS Inn (The Achievement of the Honourable Society of Lincolns Inn). 796. Ye Atcheivement of ye Hon ble Society of GRAYS Inn (The Achievement of the Honourable Society of Grays Inn)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a piece of history preserved in an exquisite copperplate engraving from the 17th century. Taken from Richard Blomes Britannia, a renowned atlas published in 1673, this image reveals a roll of arms dedicated to the Inns of Court. Each coat of arms represents individuals who contributed to the completion of this remarkable work, starting with King Charles II himself. The page displayed here is number 23 and features two coats of arms presented side by side. It is important to note that during that era, old English used "f" instead of "s" and "fs" instead of "ss". Additionally, abbreviations such as "com" were commonly used for County. The first coat belongs to the Honourable Society of Lincolns Inn (795), while the second one represents the Honourable Society of Grays Inn (796). These ornate achievements symbolize friendship, tradition, and British culture at its finest. Printed on high-quality paper with meticulous attention to detail, this antique illustration transports us back in time. Its intricate design and historical significance make it a perfect addition for those interested in genealogy or heraldic studies. Whether you are captivated by family trees or simply appreciate fine art from centuries past, this stunning copperplate print will undoubtedly add elegance and sophistication to any space it graces.
