EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the "Badge of the Five Wounds of Christ" an intricately embroidered textile from the 16th century. The artwork, created by an English School artist, is currently held in the possession of His Grace The Duke of Norfolk at Arundel Castle. The badge holds great historical significance as it was carried by Thomas Constable of Everingham during his participation in the Pilgrimage of Grace in 1536. Its presence on this pilgrimage highlights its importance as a symbol for pilgrims seeking spiritual solace and connection to their faith. The embroidery skillfully depicts hands with visible wounds, representing the stigmata or sacred marks that Jesus Christ bore during his crucifixion. Each stitch and detail on this patch serves as a powerful reminder of Christ's passion and sacrifice. As we gaze upon this remarkable design, we are transported back to Tudor times when such badges were cherished possessions among devout pilgrims. This particular piece not only exemplifies exceptional craftsmanship but also carries a deep sense of devotion and reverence. Through this photo print, Bridgeman Images allows us to appreciate both the artistic beauty and historical context behind this extraordinary artifact. It serves as a window into our past, reminding us of humanity's enduring quest for spirituality and connection with something greater than ourselves - even through centuries-old symbols like these embroidered wounds.
