Behind him, Joseph Priestley (liberal theologian) and Richard Sheridan (Whig politician) smile slyly. Sheridan sings a French Revolutionary refrain - Ca-ira!'. Fear of revolution was rife in Britain. The King of Sweden had recently been assassinated, and events in France were rapidly escalating.
