EDITORS COMMENTS
This chromolithograph, titled "Adam and Eve are Driven out of Paradise" takes us back to the biblical tale of humanity's fall from grace. Published in 1886, this print beautifully captures the moment when Adam and Eve face expulsion from the Garden of Eden. In this scene, we witness a poignant mix of emotions on their faces - sorrow, regret, and perhaps even fear. The couple is depicted wearing simple garments made from animal fur, symbolizing their newfound vulnerability outside paradise's protective walls. An angel stands tall behind them as a stern reminder of divine justice. It is an image that resonates deeply with both Judaism and Christianity as it represents the consequences faced by mankind for succumbing to temptation and committing original sin. The lush garden surrounding them serves as a stark contrast to the barren wilderness they now enter. Birds flutter overhead while nature thrives around them—a visual reminder of what they have lost due to their transgressions. This lithographic engraving showcases remarkable attention to detail and depth, bringing this ancient story vividly to life over a century later. As we gaze upon this artwork today, it invites us to reflect on our own human frailties and moral choices while reminding us that redemption is always within reach.
