Canterbury Tales - The Squire

The Squire, a character in " The Canterbury Tales", a collection of stories written by Geoffrey Chaucer at the end of the 14th century and told by a group of pilgrims on their way to the shrine of St Thomas a Becket at Canterbury Cathedral, Kent. This series of illustrations is from " Chaucers Canterbury Tales", edited by John Saunders, publ. J.M. Dent & Co, 1889, and are based on those in the Ellesmere Manuscript. (Now in the public domain.) A squire was a knights servant who would assist him in readying for battle amongst many other duties. In due course, he would hope to become a knight himself

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print transports us back to the ancient world of Geoffrey Chaucer's "Canterbury Tales". The image depicts a young squire, a knight's loyal servant, as he prepares for battle. Dressed in traditional medieval attire, the squire stands confidently beside his majestic horse, gesturing towards an unseen destination. His cape billows in the wind, symbolizing his readiness to embark on this noble journey. The exquisite detail and vibrant colors of this illustration are reminiscent of the Ellesmere Manuscript from which they were derived. This manuscript is a treasured artifact that captures the essence of Chaucer's timeless tales. As we gaze upon this piece of art, we can almost hear the stories being told by pilgrims on their way to Canterbury Cathedral. Intriguingly, this image also represents more than just adolescence and adventure; it embodies themes of faith and spirituality. The presence of St Thomas a Becket at Canterbury Cathedral adds an element of religious significance to our understanding of these characters' motivations. Through its historical context and artistic beauty, this print invites us to delve into the rich tapestry woven by Chaucer's words. It serves as a visual reminder that literature has always been intertwined with culture and history - shaping our understanding not only of past eras but also ourselves.
