EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases an exquisite engraving from Basilius Besler's Florilegium, a renowned botanical book printed in Nuremberg in 1613. The image features three vibrant citrus fruits: the Citron (Citrus medica), the Seville orange (Citrus aurantium), and the orange (Citrus aurantium). Each fruit is meticulously illustrated, capturing their unique characteristics and beauty. The Citron, with its elongated shape and bumpy texture, stands out as a centerpiece of this composition. Its pale yellow color exudes a sense of freshness and purity. Next to it, the Seville orange takes on a slightly different form with its rounder shape and smoother skin. Its bright orange hue radiates warmth and energy. Lastly, we have the classic orange fruit itself—a symbol of sweetness and juiciness that needs no introduction. Besler's attention to detail is evident in every stroke of his engraving technique. The intricate patterns on each fruit's surface are masterfully rendered, showcasing his deep understanding of botany. This print serves as both an artistic masterpiece and a valuable scientific reference for those interested in studying these citrus species. As we gaze upon this remarkable piece from 1613, we are transported back in time to appreciate nature's wonders through the eyes of one talented artist-illustrator: Basilius Besler.
