Earl Kitchener, 1910, (c1920). Portrait of British Field Marshal, diplomat and statesman Horatio Herbert Kitchener, 1st Earl Kitchener (1850-1916). Kitchener regained the Sudan for Egypt by his victory at the Battle of Omdurman (1898). He was commander of British forces during the Boer War (1899-1902) and served as War Minister from 1914 to 1916. His portrait was used on a famous World War I army recruitment poster. Kitchener drowned when HMS Hampshire, carrying him to Russia, was sunk by a German mine in the North Atlantic in 1916. From " The Great World War - A History" Volume II, edited by Frank A Mumby.
