Meeting of pitmen, on Pittington Hill, 1844. Creator: Unknown

Meeting of pitmen, on Pittington Hill, 1844. Procession of miners in County Durham. An unfortunate difference at present exists between the pitmen and the coal owners, as the readers of the " Illustrated London News" will have perceived stated in former columns, which has led to an extensive strike. For some time the men have been making preparations for this movement, by an organised union, embracing the whole body of miners in England, Scotland, and Wales and engaged a solicitor, whom they term their " Attorney-General, " to conduct and advise in their affairs. Meeting of Pitmen - A Historic Gathering for Workers' Rights

EDITORS COMMENTS
. This print captures a significant moment in history - the meeting of pitmen on Pittington Hill in 1844. The image depicts a procession of miners from County Durham, England, united in their struggle against unfair treatment by coal owners. During this time, an unfortunate divide existed between the pitmen and the coal owners, leading to an extensive strike that had been brewing for some time. In response to these grievances, the miners organized themselves into a powerful union that encompassed all miners across England, Scotland, and Wales. They even hired a solicitor they referred to as their "Attorney-General" to guide them through legal matters. The atmosphere depicted in this photograph is one of determination and solidarity. Men from various backgrounds come together under banners bearing messages of unity and justice. Their faces reflect both resilience and hope as they march forward towards change. This image serves as a reminder of the hardships faced by working-class individuals during Britain's industrial era. It highlights their courage to stand up against injustice despite facing poverty and poor living conditions. Preserved within this print is not just an anonymous photographer's work but also a testament to the power of collective action in pursuit of workers' rights. It stands as a symbol of strength for future generations fighting for fair treatment in employment industries worldwide.
