The Mother of Frederick the Great, 1726
EDITORS COMMENTS
is a captivating portrait that offers a glimpse into the life of Sophia Dorothea of Hanover, Queen consort in Prussia. Created by an unknown artist in 1936, this print showcases Sophia Dorothea's regal presence and elegance. Sophia Dorothea was not only the wife of Frederick William I but also held significant familial ties as the sister of George II, King of Great Britain. However, her most notable role was being the mother to Frederick II, who would later become known as Frederick the Great. In this portrait, Sophia Dorothea exudes grace and poise while wearing a stunning dress adorned with fur and an exquisite headdress. Her lapdog rests gently on her arm, symbolizing both her status and affection for animals. The use of color adds depth to this historical depiction from Germany's past. The artist skillfully captures every detail - from Sophia Dorothea's intricate attire to her serene expression - transporting viewers back to the eighteenth century. This image is part of "Bilder Deutscher Geschichte" a cigarette card album produced by Cigaretten-Bilderdienst in Altona-Bahrenfeld during 1936. It serves as a reminder not only of German history but also highlights important figures like Sophia Dorothea who played crucial roles within it. Overall, "The Mother of Frederick the Great" encapsulates both beauty and significance through its portrayal of an influential queen consort whose legacy continues to be remembered today.
