EDITORS COMMENTS
This 16th-century print, titled "Pomona Surprised by Vertumnus and Other Suitors" transports viewers to the enchanting world of ancient mythology. Created in Brussels between 1535 and 1540, this Belgian masterpiece showcases the exquisite artistry of Flemish tapestry. The scene unfolds within a lush garden, where Pomona, a nymph associated with fruitful abundance, finds herself at the center of an intense argument. The vibrant colors and intricate details bring this mythological tale to life as various suitors vie for Pomona's attention. Amidst the blooming flowers and bountiful apple trees, we witness a dramatic dispute taking place. A group of men - fauns and satyrs with hooved feet - passionately gesture towards Pomona while pointing at each other in heated debate. Their animated postures reveal their desire to win her favor. Intriguingly, one figure stands out from the rest – Vertumnus. This mythical character assumes different forms throughout Ovid's Metamorphoses to woo Pomona successfully. Kneeling before her with an offering of pomegranates symbolizing fertility and passion, he captures our attention with his determined gaze. The rich silk fabric used in this artwork adds texture and depth to its design while showcasing Flanders' renowned textile craftsmanship during the Renaissance period. Displayed within Chicago's prestigious Art Institute gallery space, this piece exemplifies interior decoration that seamlessly blends nature-inspired motifs into artistic expression. As we admire this heritage art print today, it serves as a reminder of humanity's enduring fascination with mythology and our eternal pursuit of love amidst nature's beauty.
