EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the intense second fight between Harry Paulson and Tom Paddock, which took place in 1851. The artwork, created by Pugnis, is a vivid illustration from Famous Fights that showcases the raw energy and brutality of bare knuckle boxing during the late 19th or early 20th century. Tom Paddock, a renowned English heavyweight champion between 1856 and 1858, faced off against Harry Paulson three times in total. However, it was their second encounter that left an indelible mark on history. Staged in Belper, Derbyshire, this grueling match lasted an astonishing 86 rounds before Paddock emerged victorious. Yet triumph quickly turned to chaos as a riot erupted among spectators following the bout. The aftermath saw both boxers sentenced to ten months of hard labor behind bars. This incident serves as a testament to the fervor surrounding prizefighting during this era. The photograph not only captures the intensity within the ring but also provides glimpses into Victorian society at large. The crowd's disorderly behavior reflects both their passion for this spectator sport and their appetite for excitement amidst an otherwise orderly society. As we gaze upon this remarkable image today, we are transported back to a time when men like Tom Paddock and Harry Paulson captivated audiences with their strength and skill inside the boxing ring. It serves as a powerful reminder of our shared human fascination with physical prowess and competition throughout history.
