Artists concept of Command Module re-entry in 5000°heat. Creator: NASA

Artists concept of Command Module re-entry in 5000° heat. The Apollo Command/Service Module was used for the Apollo program which landed astronauts on the Moon between 1969 and 1972. An ablative heat shield on the outside of the CM protected the capsule from the heat of re-entry (from space into Earths atmosphere), which is sufficient to melt most metals. During re-entry, the heat shield charred and melted away, absorbing and carrying away the intense heat in the process

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases an artist's concept of the Command Module re-entry in a scorching 5000°F heat. Created by NASA, this artwork depicts the Apollo Command/Service Module that played a pivotal role in landing astronauts on the Moon during the remarkable Apollo program between 1969 and 1972. The image highlights the crucial ablative heat shield enveloping the exterior of the Command Module, safeguarding it from the searing temperatures experienced during re-entry into Earth's atmosphere from space. This intense heat is potent enough to liquefy most metals. As depicted in this artwork, during re-entry, this innovative heat shield undergoes charring and melting, effectively absorbing and dissipating the immense thermal energy. A testament to human ingenuity and technological prowess, this image encapsulates both scientific achievement and artistic imagination. The vibrant colors employed by the artist bring life to their impression of this historic event from our not-so-distant past. With its rich heritage in space exploration, NASA has continually pushed boundaries beyond our planet's confines. This photograph serves as a reminder of humanity's audacious quest for knowledge about our universe through space travel.
