St. Ann's Royal Asylum, Brixton, 1857. Creator: Unknown

St. Ann's Royal Asylum, Brixton, 1857. In 1800...the governors [of St. Ann's Society] determined to open a country asylum for the entire maintenance and education of 20 additional boys and girls, and Brixton-hill was chosen for the site of the new school. The present building was erected in 1829: it is a handsome edifice of three stories, surmounted by a cornice and parapet, and fronted centrally by an Ionic portico and pediment...The health of the children was reported to be good, and every means had been adopted to improve their intellectual culture - a reading-room, library, and museum having been established. The bazaar which was held, last summer at Streatham produced £309; but the fund is still deficient £3000...[the children are] instructed in the rudiments of useful learning, and qualified for trade or the counting-house...[or] domestic servitude'. From "Illustrated London News", 1857

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph depicts St. Ann's Royal Asylum in Brixton, London, as it appeared in 1857. Established in 1800, St. Ann's Society initially provided for the maintenance and education of 20 additional boys and girls in addition to their existing urban asylum. The picturesque location on Brixton-hill was chosen for the new country school, and the current building was erected in 1829. The stately three-story structure, adorned with an Ionic portico, pediment, cornice, and parapet, stands as a testament to the commitment of the society to provide a nurturing environment for its children. The health and wellbeing of the children were reported to be excellent, and efforts were made to enhance their intellectual growth. A reading-room, library, and museum were among the resources established to foster learning. The children were instructed in the fundamentals of practical skills, preparing them for trades, the counting-house, or domestic servitude. The community's support was evident through the success of the annual bazaar held at Streatham, which raised an impressive £309. However, the society's funds were still in need of an additional £3000. This photograph offers a glimpse into the past, showcasing the dedication and progress of St. Ann's Royal Asylum in providing a sanctuary and opportunities for the education and growth of its children. The image serves as a poignant reminder of the historical efforts to improve the lives of vulnerable children in the 19th century.
