EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph depicts the transfer steamer Detroit, a historic vessel that operated between 1900 and 1905 in the United States. The Detroit, a magnificent example of industrial engineering from the early 20th century, was likely used to transport passengers and cargo between various locations, possibly acting as a ferry or a railroad transfer boat. The image, captured on a dry plate glass negative of size 8 x 10 inches, was taken by an unknown photographer. The Detroit steamer is shown in full glory as it docks at a pier, surrounded by the tranquil water and a backdrop of industrial structures. The steam-powered vessel, with its tall smokestacks billowing out white plumes of smoke, exudes an aura of power and efficiency. The image, held in the Library of Congress, is a testament to the rich maritime and industrial history of America during this era. The Detroit Publishing Company, known for its publication of postcards and other visual materials, is often associated with the Detroit steamer, but it is essential to note that this photograph is not from their collection. The photographer's identity remains unknown, adding to the intrigue surrounding this image. This photograph, with its timeless appeal and historical significance, offers a glimpse into the past, showcasing the role of steam-powered boats in transportation during the early 1900s in the United States.
