EDITORS COMMENTS
"This striking portrait of Field Marshal Lord Fitzroy James Henry Somerset, later 1st Baron Raglan, was painted by the Dutch artist Jan Willem Pieneman in 1821. The painting is now housed at Apsley House in London, the former residence of the Duke of Wellington. Born in 1788, Somerset rose through the ranks of the British Army to become a key figure in the Duke of Wellington's military campaign against Napoleon Bonaparte. In 1815, at the Battle of Waterloo, Somerset served as Wellington's Military Secretary. During the fierce fighting, he was wounded in his right arm, which ultimately required amputation. Undeterred, Somerset learned to write with his left hand, continuing to serve his country with distinction. Later in his career, Somerset went on to command British forces in the Crimean War. His military prowess and unwavering dedication to duty earned him the title of Field Marshal in 1854, just a year before his death in 1855. This portrait captures the resilience and determination of a man who overcame personal adversity to become a respected and accomplished military leader. The painting is a testament to the enduring legacy of the Georgian era and the indomitable spirit of those who served in the British Army during a time of great upheaval and change." Historic England Photo Library's collection is a treasure trove of historical images, offering a glimpse into the past and preserving the stories of those who shaped history. This portrait of Field Marshal Lord Fitzroy James Henry Somerset is just one example of the many fascinating images that can be found in the collection.
