EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a significant moment in the construction of the Birmingham to Preston Motorway (M6) during the 1960s. The image showcases the meticulous work being carried out on Section B, specifically at chainage 3,000 of the southbound carriageway in Stafford, Staffordshire. In this particular scene, our attention is drawn to a KL44 crane positioned prominently in the foreground. The crane's imposing presence is highlighted as it strikes steel forms from the marginal haunches with precision and power. This intricate process exemplifies the expertise and dedication of John Laing Construction Ltd. , who undertook this massive project. The Birmingham to Preston Motorway (M6) was an ambitious endeavor that spanned several junctions from J13 to J16. Commencing in June 1960, its construction aimed to enhance road transport infrastructure and facilitate smoother journeys for motorists traversing between these two major cities. Section B alone covered an impressive distance of 6½ miles between Whitgreave and Beech. This photograph not only showcases remarkable civil engineering achievements but also provides a glimpse into how machinery played an integral role in transforming landscapes for improved transportation networks. Preserved by A© Historic England Archive, this print serves as a testament to human ingenuity and determination displayed during one of Britain's most significant road-building projects.
