EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the magnificent Trionfi sugar sculptures of Vulcan and Neptune, created by renowned artists Giovanni Battista Lenardi and Arnold van Westerhout. The exquisite etching, dating back to 1688, captures the essence of these table sculptures designed for a grand banquet hosted by British Ambassador Roger Palmer, Earl of Castlemaine in Rome on January 14,1687. In this allegorical composition on the Four Elements, Vulcan and Neptune personify Fire and Water respectively. These divine figures stand as symbols of power and strength amidst an intricate display of sugary artistry. The attention to detail is evident in every stroke captured by John Michael Wright's masterful etching technique. The Trionfi sugar sculptures were not only a visual feast but also represented diplomatic relations between His Sacred Majesty James II, King of England, Scotland, France, Ireland (and more) and His Holiness Innocent XI. This historic embassy sought to strengthen ties between nations through artistic expression. Accompanied by captions inscribed with precision at the upper right corner (Gio. Batta. Lenardi delin. ) and lower left corner (Arnoldo V. Westerhout Sculp. ), this print transports us back in time to witness the splendor that graced that memorable evening. As we admire this extraordinary piece from the Liszt Collection today, let us appreciate its historical significance as a testament to both artistic brilliance and international diplomacy during a remarkable era in European history.
