EDITORS COMMENTS
This image is taken from the Apocalypse of Angers tapestry series, created between 1375 and 1382 in Angers, France. Commissioned by Louis I, Duke of Anjou, the series was based on cartons attributed to Jean de Bruges. The scene depicted here is number 15, titled 'The Seven Last Plagues and the Harps of God.' The upper portion of the tapestry showcases a group of angels, each holding a golden vial or bowl filled with the Wrath of God. These vials represent the seven last plagues as described in the Book of Revelation. The plagues include hail and fire mixed with blood, a burning mountain falling into the sea, a star falling from the sky and contaminating the waters, a scorching wind, darkness, and the death of every living creature. The angels in this scene are poised and determined as they prepare to pour out the contents of their vials. The golden hues of their robes and the intricate details of their wings add to the otherworldly and ethereal atmosphere of the image. The harps of God, which are not visible in this detail but can be seen in the larger context of the tapestry, symbolize the divine power and music that accompanies the plagues. The International Gothic style of the tapestry is evident in the delicate use of color and the intricate details of the angels' features and wings. The horizontal composition of the image adds to the sense of movement and energy, as if the plagues are about to be unleashed upon the world. This powerful and evocative image is a testament to the artistic and religious traditions of the 14th century in France.
