Mathias, charged up the heights of Dargai in India. The Afridis, a large and fierce force of local tribesmen, had fortified the position and were determined to defend it against the advancing British army. The storming of Dargai is considered a significant event in the history of the Second Anglo-Afghan War, which lasted from 1878 to 1880. The battle took place on October 18, 1897, and the Gordon Highlanders, along with their Gurkha allies, played a crucial role in the British victory. The image shows the Highlanders, with their distinctive kilts and tartan, charging up the steep and rocky terrain, weapons at the ready.
