EDITORS COMMENTS
October 1897: The Storming of Dargai - A Moment Frozen in Time This evocative photograph captures the intense and pivotal moment during the Second Anglo-Afghan War, as the Gordon Highlanders, under the command of Colonel John H.C.E. Mathias, charged up the heights of Dargai in India. The Afridis, a large and fierce force of local tribesmen, had fortified the position and were determined to defend it against the advancing British army. The storming of Dargai is considered a significant event in the history of the Second Anglo-Afghan War, which lasted from 1878 to 1880. The battle took place on October 18, 1897, and the Gordon Highlanders, along with their Gurkha allies, played a crucial role in the British victory. The image shows the Highlanders, with their distinctive kilts and tartan, charging up the steep and rocky terrain, weapons at the ready. The Afridis, seen in the background, are shown retreating, unable to withstand the fierce onslaught of the British and Gurkha forces. Colonel Mathias, a decorated military leader, led his men with courage and determination, inspiring them to overcome the difficult terrain and the determined resistance of the Afridis. The storming of Dargai marked a turning point in the war, and the British were able to secure control of the strategic passes leading into Afghanistan. This photograph is a powerful reminder of the bravery and determination of the soldiers who fought in the Second Anglo-Afghan War, and the pivotal role that the Gordon Highlanders and their Gurkha allies played in securing a British victory. The image captures the raw emotion and intensity of the battlefield, transporting us back in time to a moment frozen in history.
