EDITORS COMMENTS
Albert of Saxony (1828-1902), esteemed monarch and nobleman of European history, is depicted in this vertical, upright engraving. Born on August 23, 1828, in Dresden, Albert was a member of the prestigious House of Wettin, which has ruled over the Duchy and then the Kingdom of Saxony since 1423. He ascended to the throne on November 17, 1873, following the death of his father, King John I. Albert's reign was marked by his dedication to modernizing and strengthening the institutions of the Kingdom of Saxony. He implemented various political and social reforms, focusing on improving education, infrastructure, and the economy. Albert's progressive policies were influenced by his experiences as a regent for his underage brother, George, during the Revolutions of 1848. Albert's regal presence is captured in this enchanting portrait, where he dons the traditional uniform of the Saxon military. The monarch's stern yet resolute expression conveys his strong leadership qualities and unwavering commitment to his people and the Kingdom of Saxony. The engraving serves as a captivating testament to the rich history and enduring legacy of this European monarch. Albert's rule extended beyond the political sphere, as he was also a devoted patron of the arts and sciences. He was married to Queen Carola of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, and together they had six children. Albert passed away on June 18, 1902, leaving behind a lasting impact on the history and people of Saxony.
