This evocative image captures the intensity and determination of the Second Ashanti War (1873-74), as British and native soldiers advance on the Ashanti capital of Kumasi, now known as Coomassie. The Second Ashanti War was a significant conflict between the British, represented by Sir Garnet Wolseley, and the Ashanti people, led by their King, Kofi Karikari, also known as King Prempeh I. The war was primarily fought over the control of the coastal town of Elmina, located on the West Coast of Africa, which was of great strategic and economic importance due to its valuable gold imports. The date on this photograph is 28 March 1874, and it depicts the decisive moment as the British and native forces, numbering around 2,000 men, approach the gates of Kumasi. The Ashanti army, estimated to be around 21,000 strong, had put up a fierce resistance, but the superior firepower of the British ultimately proved to be the deciding factor. King Kofi Karikari, a skilled military leader, had led his people in several successful wars against European powers in the past, but he was ultimately unable to prevent the British from securing Elmina and ultimately, Kumasi. The war ended with the signing of the Treaty of Fomena in January 1875, which recognized British control over the Ashanti territory and paved the way for the British colonization of the Gold Coast. This photograph is a poignant reminder of the complex and often violent history of colonialism in Africa, and the profound impact it had on the lives of millions of people.
