Dr. Barnardo's Homes, a leading British children's charity founded by Thomas Barnardo in 1867, had been providing shelter, education, and employment opportunities for orphaned, abandoned, and neglected children for decades. In an effort to provide a better future for these children, Dr. Barnardo initiated a program to send them to Canada, where they could be offered farmsteads and apprenticeships.
