Battle Areas from a Womans Point of View, Helen McKie

Impressions in shell-shattered France by Helen McKie. McKie, a staff artist for The Bystander (and sister paper, The Graphic), travelled extensively around Europe, before, during and after the First World War. This series, published in The Bystander in 1919, conveyed scenes of the ruined post-war landscapes of France, and of the women coping in such conditions. 1. A small estaminet on the outskirts of Rheims a few hundred yards from the old French trenches - only the ground floor remains. 2. A woman returning with her small effects from her partially destroyed house. 3. One of two water-taps set up in the main streets where women do their washing. Date: 1919
