EDITORS COMMENTS
This vertical engraving depicts Enrique Mar Fernandez de Borbon y Asturias, also known as Enrique, Infante de Borbon, a Spanish prince born on November 2, 1823. The Infante was the eldest son of the Carlist claimant to the Spanish throne, Don Carlos, and his wife, Maria Cristina of Naples and Sicily. Tragically, Enrique's life was cut short at the age of 47 when he was fatally wounded in a duel with the Duke of Montpensier on July 14, 1870, in Seville, Spain. The Infante's life was marked by political turmoil and exile. In 1830, following the abdication of King Ferdinand VII, his father, Don Carlos, led a rebellion against Queen Isabella II, who had come to the throne at a young age. The rebellion, known as the First Carlist War, lasted until 1839 and resulted in the defeat and exile of Don Carlos and his family. Enrique, who had been educated in France, became a prominent figure in liberal circles and was known to be a Freemason. He returned to Spain in 1854, but his political beliefs and association with liberalism put him at odds with the conservative regime. In 1868, during the Revolution of 1868, Enrique was proclaimed King of Spain, but his reign was short-lived. He was deposed in 1870, and the following year, he was killed in the aforementioned duel with the Duke of Montpensier. This striking portrait, with its bold lines and dramatic contrasts, captures the intensity and charisma of the Infante de Borbon, a man whose life was shaped by the political upheavals of his time. The image serves as a poignant reminder of the complex and often tumultuous history of Spain and the European continent in the 19th century.
