The year was 1917, and the soldiers were engaged in a crucial mission to prevent the spread of malaria among their ranks. Malaria was a major health concern for troops stationed in the marshy regions of Greece, and the laborious task of digging ditches and draining the soil was essential to their survival. The soldiers in this image are seen wearing helmets and wading through the muddy waters, their faces etched with determination and focus.
