EDITORS COMMENTS
Plate 169 from John James Audubon's renowned work, "Birds of America," features the intricately detailed illustration of the Mangrove Cuckoo (Coccyzus minor). This print, originally from the double elephant folio edition produced between 1831 and 1834, showcases the mangrove cuckoo perched on a gnarled branch in a mangrove forest. The meticulous hand-colouring brings out the vibrant plumage of the bird, with its spotted underparts and striking black and white markings. The Mangrove Cuckoo is a cuculiform bird, belonging to the Cuculidae family. Native to Central and South America, it is commonly found in mangrove swamps and other wetlands. This elusive bird is known for its distinctive call, which resembles the sound of a laughing baby. The illustration captures the bird in its natural habitat, outside the confines of a cage or enclosure. The mangrove forest setting adds to the sense of authenticity, with its tangled branches and lush foliage providing the perfect backdrop for the perching cuckoo. The Mangrove Cuckoo is a diurnal bird, meaning it is active during the day. This is reflected in the bright daytime scene depicted in the print, with the sun casting dappled light through the forest canopy. Audubon's "Birds of America" is considered a masterpiece of ornithological illustration, and this plate is no exception. The intricate aquatint engraving and hand-colouring techniques used by Robert Havell & Son in London bring the Mangrove Cuckoo to life, offering a stunning and accurate representation of this fascinating bird species.
