Coronation 1953, Queen accepts pearl sword at Temple Bar

The newly crowned Queen Elizabeth II taking part in a traditional ceremony at Temple Bar in Fleet Street, London on 12 June 1952, 10 days after her Coronation. Photograph shows her accepting the pearl sword from the Lord Mayor at the boundary of the City. The custom, whereby the monarch requests permission to enter the City from the Lord Mayor, is thought to date from 1588 when Elizabeth I went to St. Pauls Cathedral to return thanks for the defeat of the Spanish Armada, and is regarded as token of the rights of the City as against the Sovereign. Date: 1953

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this historic photograph, Queen Elizabeth II participates in a time-honored tradition at Temple Bar in Fleet Street, London, on June 12, 1953, ten days after her Coronation. The newly crowned monarch stands before the Lord Mayor, who presents her with the pearl sword, symbolizing the City of London's consent and recognition of her rule. This custom, believed to date back to 1588, marks the monarch's request for permission to enter the City, emphasizing the City's unique rights and independence from the Sovereign. The Queen, resplendent in her regal attire, is surrounded by a grand procession, including her consort, Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, and various members of the royal family, escorted by cavalry and an open Landau. The ceremony takes place on the boundary of the City, where the cobblestone streets of London meet the ancient walls, and is a testament to the rich history and tradition of the British monarchy. The image captures a moment of unity and tradition, as the Queen and her entourage come together to celebrate the continuation of a centuries-old ritual, which has been passed down through generations. The pearl sword, with its intricate design and historical significance, adds a touch of grandeur and solemnity to the occasion, making this photograph a precious reminder of the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II and the enduring customs of the British monarchy.
