EDITORS COMMENTS
This poignant print features the Death Plaque of Ernest Emmerson, a brave soldier who made the ultimate sacrifice during the First World War. There were two Ernest Emmersons listed on Soldiers Died in the Great War, both of whom made significant contributions to the conflict. The first Ernest Emmerson was Lance Corporal 1247 in the York and Lancaster Regiment, 12th (Service) (Sheffield) Battalion. Born in Scoles, Rotherham, he enlisted in Sheffield and was tragically killed in action in France and Flanders on July 1, 1916. His death is a reminder of the countless lives lost during the brutal battles of the Western Front. The second Ernest Emmerson served in the Norfolk Regiment, 1/5th Battalion (T.F.). Hailing from Dersingham, Norfolk, he enlisted in his hometown and was unfortunately killed in Gallipoli on August 28, 1915. His death came during the early stages of the campaign, which would ultimately prove to be a costly and difficult battle for the Allied forces. This Death Plaque, bearing the names and details of these two brave soldiers, serves as a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made by Ernest Emmerson and countless others during the First World War. The image is a poignant tribute to their memory and a testament to the enduring impact of their bravery and sacrifice.
