Born in 1552, Coke rose to prominence during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I, serving as Serjeant-at-Law and then as Attorney General. His legal expertise and commitment to upholding the common law earned him a reputation as a champion of individual rights and the rule of law. The image, dated around 1616, shows Coke in his later years. He is depicted wearing a ruff, a high collar typical of the Elizabethan era, and a skullcap, a sign of his legal status.
