EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking portrait captures the intense gaze and profound wisdom of Edward Coke, one of the most influential jurists in English history. Born in 1552, Coke rose to prominence during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I, serving as Serjeant-at-Law and then as Attorney General. His legal expertise and commitment to upholding the common law earned him a reputation as a champion of individual rights and the rule of law. The image, dated around 1616, shows Coke in his later years. He is depicted wearing a ruff, a high collar typical of the Elizabethan era, and a skullcap, a sign of his legal status. A white beard frames his stern yet thoughtful face, adding to his air of authority and wisdom. Coke's piercing eyes seem to penetrate the viewer, as if to challenge them to consider the weighty matters of law and justice that he had dedicated his life to. Coke's legal legacy is vast and enduring. He was a key figure in the development of the common law, and his writings on the subject continue to be studied and referenced by scholars and legal professionals today. Among his most notable achievements was his role in the case of "Dr Bonham's Case," which established the principle of "proceeding according to the law and the custom of the realm," a foundational concept in English law. Despite his many accomplishments, Coke's tenure as Lord Chief Justice of the King's Bench was marked by conflict with the king and his advisors, leading to his eventual dismissal from office. However, his contributions to the legal system and his unwavering commitment to the rule of law continue to be celebrated and revered in England and beyond.
