The European Bison, also known as the Wisent or European Wisent, is the largest European terrestrial mammal and an endangered species. This pair is part of a larger herd that lives in the reserve, where they are allowed to roam free but are supplementarily fed to ensure their survival. The young calf, with its soft, downy coat and large, curious eyes, lies close to its protective father or parent male, who stands tall and ready to defend his family. The male's impressive horns, which can reach up to 2 meters in length, are raised, signaling a warning to any potential threat. The birch trees that surround them provide a perfect camouflage for the animals, making it difficult for predators to spot them. European Bisons were once widespread across Europe, but their numbers dwindled due to hunting and habitat loss. Today, they can only be found in small populations in Europe and Asia.
