Two types of dresses, 1954

On the left, an 1890-inspired party frock in striped taffeta with the stand-up collar, tight bodice, near-crinoline skirt, and steel-buttoned, three-quarter sleeves characteristic of a decade when fashion reached an all-time height of dash and distinction. By Blanes. Added is a piquant students collar, artists bow and figure-flattering vertical stripes. On the right is a dress of featherlight tweed by Frederica, its blouse and skirt air accomplished by means of a built-in belt and softly blousing top. Here, at last, tailoring has become completely feminine - a matter of sculpting to the form rather than following hard, masculine lines

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photograph from 1954, two stunningly different dresses embody the essence of fashion's evolving landscape. On the left, an 1890-inspired party frock by Blanes captivates with its timeless charm. The dress, crafted from striped taffeta, boasts a stand-up collar, tight bodice, and a near-crinoline skirt adorned with steel-buttoned, three-quarter sleeves. This elegant number is further accentuated by a piquant students collar, artists bow, and figure-flattering vertical stripes, paying homage to a bygone era when fashion reached an all-time height of dash and distinction. In stark contrast, the dress on the right, designed by Frederica, represents the pinnacle of modernity and femininity. The featherlight tweed ensemble is a testament to the art of tailoring, with a blouse and skirt seamlessly united by a built-in belt and softly blousing top. This design marks a significant departure from the hard, masculine lines of the past, as tailoring has become an art of sculpting to the form rather than confining it. The slim, curvy silhouette of the dress epitomizes the spirit of the 1950s, where women's clothing embraced and celebrated their curves. These two dresses, separated by decades, illustrate the rich tapestry of fashion history and the enduring allure of style.
