EDITORS COMMENTS
The Great Balas Ruby, also known as the Black Prince's Ruby, is a captivating and historically significant gemstone that has been a part of the British Crown Jewels since the 14th century. This magnificent ruby, estimated to weigh around 170 carats, is believed to have been brought to Europe from India during the Crusades and was owned by the Spanish Infante Don Pedro, the Black Prince of Asturias, who brought it to England after his victory in the Battle of Neville's Cross in 1345. The ruby is set in a gold mount and surrounded by pearls and smaller rubies, creating an intricate and stunning piece of jewellery. The dark red hue of the ruby is accentuated by the contrasting white pearls, making it a true treasure to behold. The Great Balas Ruby has a rich and storied history, having passed through the hands of various English monarchs, including King Henry V and King Henry VIII. It is said that the ruby was used as a seal stone and was even worn as a ring by King Edward IV. The ruby's name, "Balas," is believed to have originated from the Persian word for ruby, "balas," meaning "precious stone." The term "Black Prince" refers to Don Pedro, who was given the title "Prince of Wales" and "Prince of Aquitaine" in 1337, making him the heir to the English throne. This 19th century print of the Great Balas Ruby offers a glimpse into the past, allowing us to appreciate the beauty and historical significance of this rare and valuable gemstone. The intricate details of the gold mount and the contrasting pearls add to the allure of the ruby, making it a true masterpiece of English jewellery.
