EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the enigmatic figure of Bertha Mrazek, also known as Georges Marasco, a Belgian subject who became renowned for her extraordinary display of stigmata - the mysterious and holy wounds that mirrored those of Christ's crucifixion. The image, taken during the 1920s, documents the third and final instance of her stigmatization, which occurred over the course of a single week. Bertha Mrazek, born in 1875, led a seemingly ordinary life until her late forties when she began to exhibit signs of a profound spiritual transformation. Her first stigmatic episode occurred in 1919, followed by a second in 1921. However, it was the third and most intense manifestation of stigmata in 1923 that brought her international attention. During this period, Mrazek's body bore the wounds of the crucifixion, including the five wounds on her hands, feet, and side. The wounds bled profusely and were accompanied by various other symptoms, such as ecstasies, visions, and intense spiritual experiences. Her condition was extensively documented by medical professionals and religious authorities, who were unable to explain the phenomenon. The photograph, taken during this time, offers a haunting and poignant glimpse into the life of this intriguing historical figure. Mrazek's story continues to fascinate scholars, theologians, and those interested in the paranormal, as her experiences challenge our understanding of the human condition and the boundaries of the physical world. Despite the controversy and skepticism surrounding her case, Bertha Mrazek's legacy as a dual personality subject and stigmatist remains an enduring mystery, one that invites us to explore the depths of the human spirit and the enigmatic nature of the divine.
