The Harvest of the Chosen,

EDITORS COMMENTS
scene 12 from the Apocalypse of Angers tapestry series, is a striking representation of the eschatological mowing of the Earth by the Chosen Angels, as depicted by the 14th-century artist Nicolas Bataille. Commissioned by Louis I, Duke of Anjou, after cartons attributed to Jean de Bruges, this tapestry dates back to the period between 1375 and 1382 and is an exceptional example of International Gothic art. The scene portrays a group of angels, clad in flowing robes, reaping the ripe wheat fields with sickles in hand. The chosen souls, represented by the figures in the foreground, are shown in a state of blissful contemplation as they watch the angels at work. The colorful, intricate design of the tapestry is a testament to the exquisite craftsmanship of the time, with each figure and detail rendered with remarkable precision. The Apocalypse of Angers series, which consists of thirteen scenes, was created for the Duke's private chapel in Angers Castle in the Pays de la Loire region of France. The tapestries were intended to illustrate the biblical text of the Book of Revelation and serve as a visual representation of the Duke's piety and devotion. The horizontal composition of the tapestry, with its vibrant colors and intricate details, not only showcases the artistic prowess of the artists involved but also provides a fascinating glimpse into the religious and cultural milieu of the Middle Ages. The Harvest of the Chosen remains an enduring symbol of the apocalyptic beliefs and artistic achievements of the Western world during the medieval period.
