EDITORS COMMENTS
Agrippina the Elder, a Roman noblewoman of the 1st century AD, is depicted in this exquisite marble bust from Pergamum, now housed in the Archaeological Museum in Istanbul, Turkey. Born in 14 BC as Vipsania Agrippina, she was the granddaughter of Mark Antony and Octavia, the sister of Octavian (later known as Augustus), and the mother of the future emperor Caligula and Agrippina the Younger. Agrippina's age is estimated to be around 40-50 years old in this representation, showcasing the wisdom and authority of a woman of power in the Roman Empire. Her curly, long hair is meticulously rendered, framing a face with a strong jawline and expressive features. The broken bust suggests the passage of time and the rich history of this ancient artifact. The intricate details of the marble carving reveal the skill and artistry of the Roman craftsmen of the time, providing a glimpse into the imperial period and the lives of the powerful women who shaped the Roman Empire. The bust's journey from Pergamum to Istanbul is a testament to the enduring legacy of Roman art and history.
